Vegan route around Barcelona

Food is an important part of the pleasure of travel: sampling the cuisine of the place you are visiting, enjoying it at a leisurely pace, lingering over your favorite dish with friends, discovering new flavors... For a vegan, however, things can get trick

There is a place that vegans dream of and it's called Gopal. It's right on one of the liveliest squares in the old quarter of the city: George Orwell (popularly known as Plaza del Tripi). Here, at this beautiful fast-food restaurant, you can try everything, literally: chorizo, bacon and cheese sandwiches and the famous Gopal burgers, all 100% vegan. Special mention should go to the bakery Lujuria Vegana (www.lujuriavegana.com), which takes up one corner of Gopal. Lujuria is Spanish for lust and it's an apt name for the delicious cakes served up here. Chocolate sinfully spills over sponge cake, muffins are filled with custard and cakes are smothered in cream and strawberries – all without a single animal protein and at very reasonable prices. Who can resist such a temptation?

Gopal makes a great start, or end point, on our vegan route that crosses the old heart of Barcelona, running parallel to the sea. Because only a few minutes walk from there, right next to the Plaza del Pi, we find Juicy Jones (Cardinal Casañas, 7), another spot that celebrates life with vibrant colors and animal-free dishes. It's a vegan restaurant with some Indian dishes, and if one Juicy Jones weren't enough, they have another establishment on Calle Hospital, 74. Reasonable prices and great atmosphere.

We are still walking through the center of the city and into the vegetarian quarter of the barrio El Raval. The Calle Pintor Fortuny is home to two good dining options for vegans. The first is L'Hortet (Pintor Fortuny, 32). This is an intimate, cozy eatery with tasty vegan dishes such as watermelon soup or black corn pancakes with garlic and carrot oil. The weekend menu costs 15 euros.

And in Pintor Fortuny, at number 25, we find Biocenter, a great choice for an all-you-can-eat salad buffet menu or combo plates. All the choices include a vegan option. It's a great place for groups, because the space is huge. The menus range from 6 to 15 euros.

Also on Pintor Fortuny, at number 33, is the store Marsan, where you can buy everything from Spirulina to small vegan snacks such as vegetable pates or seaweed salads. In Calle Doctor Dou 17, near the corner with Pintor Fortuny, check out the supermarket Veritas, specializing in organic products that are suitable for vegans.

Leaving the center of the city, make your way to the bustling district of Gracia, which also hides a place of pilgrimage for vegans: Veg World, in Calle Bruniquer 26, offers delicious Indian thali cuisine, with a menu for just 9 euros during the week.

With all these delicious options, we hope to see our vegan friends soon in Barcelona!

Bio Center para comer de día está súperbien, quedas satisfecho. Para la noche y esporádicamente en el Govinda como dicen tiene un toque romanticamente hindú.
