The way to a city’s heart is through its food
There’s more to a city than its monuments, parks and venues. Its history and personality are influenced by many factors; by movies, music, popular culture, and most of all: food. Join the eDreams Travel Blog in a foodie’s tour around Salamanca, Spain.
Located in the west of Spain, 80 km from the border with Portugal, Salamanca is one of oldest and most beautiful cities in the country. The famous University of Salamanca was founded in 1218 and holds more than 30.000 students every year.
A curious detail: 60% of all the ham (jamon iberico) produced in Spain comes from here. A must-taste Spanish ham is Guijuelo. Ask for it in butcher shops around the city.
Another magical dish from Salamanca is the Armuna lentil, a very special lentil, only grown in the village with the same name. They say it’s taste and nutritious value are without equal.
Another speciality of the town is the “hornazo”, a type of baked or fried pastry stuffed with meat, chorizo, ham and hard boiled eggs. The best moment to savour this dish is two weeks after Easter, when people in Salamanca celebrate “Lunes de Aguas” (The Mondays of Water) and commonly go out in the field for a picnic with their friends and family.
If you’re still hungry, just walk around the town (the best area for this is Van Dyck), hop into a bar and ask for “pinchos” (snack), try the “patatas bravas” (Spanish fries), the sausages and the small bacon sandwiches.
For desert try some of Salamanca’s sweet specialities: the La Alberca turron, the “peronillas”, the “repelaos” (almond cookies). Or just ask for the chef to recommend you something delicious!
