The species Fragaria vesca Fragaria chilonensis (from Chile) is a cross between the European species it is a large, tasty and rugged strawberry and is a variety that and was discovered during the time of colonization.
Features. Strawberries are easily distinguished by their heart shape and the red color of their skin when ripe; they usually measure between 18 and 22 millimeters and weigh approximately 25 grams. Among the most common varieties are the Camarosa (Californian, good taste and look very bright), the Tudla (a large strawberry, aromatic and with an intense red color, inside and out), the Big Bear ( which is a red orange color and has a flattened wedge shape), the Cartuno (conical in shape, with a sweet taste), the Carisma (soft red and large), Irving (rounded and a dull red), the Bird (conical in shape and a great taste) and the jungle (so-called summer strawberries, since they appear in the market between July and September).
Season. Strawberries in spring are excellent they are found for sale from late march to the end of July.
How to buy. They are one of the most delicate and perishable fruits. Therefore, strawberries should be chosen by the firmness of their flesh and there overall shine.
How to store. It is preferable to keep them in the refrigerator and consume within 4-5 days (if not too ripe).They should be kept in a bowl or a plate (not in plastic) without removing the green stalk as this improves their conservation. It is generally best to avoid excessive handling and exposure to heat. It is also advisable to wash them at the last minute before serving and without leaving them to soak in water as this takes away their aroma and flavors.
In the kitchen ... The best way to enjoy this fruit is fresh and raw. They can be served with sugar, cream, orange, lemon juice, yogurt, sprinkled with a pinch of pepper or a dash of red wine, sparkling wine or balsamic vinegar. It is an excellent ingredient in salads (both fruits and vegetables), smoothies, cakes and all kinds of desserts and as a jam.
Did you know? The strawberry has diuretic properties, it regulates liver function, helps normalize blood pressure and has a laxative effect due to its soluble fiber content. It only contains 30 kcal per 100 g, so it is recommended for those who are on a health regime!
