Montserrat tomatoes belong to a traditional variety from the inland regions of Catalonia, especially the Vallés. Also known as "rose tomatoes, because when cut open they bear some resemblance to this flower.
The Montserrat tomato had until recently almost ceased to be cultivated, being displaced by more productive and commercial varieties. But a few years ago studies were carried out on the properties of this tomato, which showed that despite being its traditional low productivity, it can now be grown again more intensively. It is now highly regarded in the gourmet kitchen. Some people compare this tomato variety with the Raf tomato.
How to buy Montserrat tomatoes
This tomato is usually large, very tasty, aromatic and quite sweet. It has a consistent texture and little pulp, is pink and green, with the shape somewhat flattened with rounded lobes and furrows.
It is usually found in greengrocers in the province of Girona and the Vallés region, between late spring and early autumn.
How to eat Montserrat tomatoes
