Melon

Melon is one of the most refreshing summer fruits. It sweet and tasty flesh is an excellent ingredient in all kinds of salads, fruit salads, sorbets, ice cream...

Features.

The melon belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae (like pumpkin, watermelon and cucumber) and is grown in countries with hot and temperate climates. Oval or spherical, the color of the skin varies from yellow to dark green; it is often ridged or reticulated. Its juicy, sweet flesh is yellow and the seeds are coated with a gelatinous juice which is easily removable. There are over 100 varieties of melon but the most common are:

- Piñonet. This is Oval shaped and has a dark green skin with furrows.  It is sometimes known as “toad skin" and its flesh is white, crisp and very sweet.
- Gaul. Round in shape and a small size, its skin is smooth and green flesh and is white inside. It has a Sweet taste and a soft texture.
- Honey Dew. With its Long, smooth skin it is sweet, juicy and slightly aromatic. It is a late maturing variety.
- Tendral. Also known as "winter melon" is oval shaped has dark green skin and whitish flesh.
- Cantalupo. The so-called "French melon" is spherical in shape, with yellow-green rind and orange flesh. It is prized for its aroma and flavor.

Season.

The best time to enjoy this juicy, aromatic fruit is during the summer months from July to September.

How to buy.

When picked up, the melon should give the feeling of heaviness and not feel light. In addition, if you press the edges they should give easily (a sign of good maturity). It is preferable to choose specimens that do not have bumps, marks or bruising.

The melon is a fruit to eat fresh but can also be used as an ingredient for the preparation of salads, fruit salads, cold soups, juices, sorbets and ice creams. Its sweet flavor marries well with salty ingredients like ham.

How to preserve.

A ripe melon should be eaten as soon as possible as it breaks down fairly quickly. Once opened store in the refrigerator and cover with a plastic wrap as it easily absorbs the flavors of other foods.

Melon contains up to 95% water and sugar content lower than that of other fruits, therefore has lower calorie content. It is rich in vitamin C and provitamin A, as well as potassium, phosphorus, iron and magnesium.
