The mandarin is a citrus fruit that evokes childhood memories
The mandarin is a citrus fruit that evokes childhood memories: children love them, probably because they’re much easier to peel and are sweeter than other citrus fruit, such as oranges or grapefruit.
Characteristics
The mandarin comes from Asia, and its name is related to the "mandarins", the former bureaucrats, officials and rulers of the Qing Dynasty in Imperial China who wore robes the same color as the mandarin. Like all citrus fruits, mandarins are high in vitamins, especially C.
Choosing a mandarin
Choose heavier fruit: this indicates that it is juicier inside. The skin should be smooth. There are many varieties, one of the most popular being the clementine.
Uses
The mandarin has many uses in the kitchen, whether in sweet or savory dishes. It goes well with meat, game, poultry and some fish. It's great for juicing, making smoothies or pastries. Or simply use the zest or rind to flavor oils, marinades, stir-fries and pies.
Conservation and storage
Keeps well in the refrigerator for a week.
Enjoy: the mandarin is delicious, easy to eat and cheap.
