In Delicooks we've already spoken of the origins, characteristics and nutritional properties of the tomato, an essential ingredient in every kitchen. To view the general overview, click here. We will now focus on the different varieties of tomatoes and how to buy them.
The cherry tomato is characterized by its size (between 1 and 3 cm in diameter) and its intense flavor and aroma. It is probably the ancestor of all of today's varieties and it presumably grew wild in tropical and subtropical areas. This ancestral tomato is increasingly prized today for its versatility and its numerous qualities, not merely thanks to its aroma and taste, but also its aesthetic value. Even when cultivated as a potted plant it is exceedingly ornamental.
There are different varieties of cherry tomatoes: vine, plum, and pear or the so-called nipple of Venus. Some are green, others yellow, some almost black, others of varying degrees of red, plus all shades in between. The size and shape are also different depending on the variety. The only features shared by all varieties of cherry tomatoes is that they are small, sweet, juicy and flavorful.
How to buy cherry tomatoes
They can be found year round in supermarkets, but do best in temperate climates. The best time of year is between mid-spring and mid-autumn. Find ones that are not bruised and that are bright and shiny. Whatever the size, shape and color, which can change depending on the variety, they're always delicious.
