You’re a London-trained graphic designer, although the climate and Mediterranean lifestyle brought you to Barcelona. Besides the weather, what else made you stay in Spain?
I arrived in Barcelona after a year traveling around Australia and, in less than a week, I’d found work as a designer. I realized that the climate and lifestyle (inseparable from the climate) in Barcelona was very similar to what I’d found in Australia. Professionally, I've done well, and I’ve managed to stay freelance, which I like. So that’s certainly one of the reasons I stayed in Spain. When I first came to Barcelona, I’d no intention of staying, but here I am!
Much of your work revolves around the world of food: you’ve done a lot of restaurant branding and you’ve also designed packaging. Do you also like good food?
Yes, I love cuisine and everything about it, matching a good wine with good food, creating the right atmosphere, plus the appropriate image.
What is your favorite food?
I don’t really have a favorite, but if I had to choose, I love a good plate of prawns! I’ve always liked good food, ever since I was a child, and I always had a good appetite for everything (well, except for brussels sprouts, which I now love!).
So, you’re a good cook. Can you give us a recipe?
Thai fish curry is a dish I make quite often. It's simple but tastes incredible.
If you want to see the recipe, check out the Delicooks blog.
What was your favorite project?
One is the logo I made for the Mont Roig Café in Sitges. I identify a lot with this logo, it has a very clear visual concept, and it’s simple with a touch of humor. It was the first thing I did for a bar and it led to many more projects.
What is never missing from your fridge?
I love cereal and if there isn’t a bottle of fresh milk in the fridge I get a little on edge. And a bottle of Albariño. The bare necessities to survive!
What product would you like to design the packaging for?
Water, packaging for a brand of water. It's fascinating how they’ve managed to convert a staple into almost a luxury. Quite a challenge for any designer.
What has been your most rewarding job?
Fortunately, my job is like a hobby and I've done many projects that were rewarding, and for many reasons. Coming up with the new design for packaging that boosts sales can be as rewarding as designing a logo for the wedding of some friends.
What are your current projects?
Right now I'm finishing the design for two Brandys. I’m also designing wine labels and packaging for meat products. In the new year I’ll be doing a new cookbook.
Our guest chefs bring you their unique and personal take on food.
