  1. Whenever possible, choose organic foods. These have not been treated with chemicals and respect and protect the environment, the farmer and the consumer.
  2. Choose locally produced food in order to reduce the energy consumption involved in long-distance transport. For the same reason, choose in-season produce.
  3. Plan your shopping and just buy what you’re going to eat immediately. We often buy more than we need and throw away unused food.
  4. Use a shopping cart and reusable carrier bags.
  5. To avoid waste of packaging, buy legumes, nuts, olives and grains in bulk whenever possible.
  6. Consume fewer animal products. Meat production has a high-energy cost and increases pollution and CO2 emissions. Remember also, that over-fishing is destroying our oceans. Instead, increase consumption of soy-based (non-GM) vegetable protein and its derivatives, or seitan.
  7. Grow your own herbs. A garden, a patio or balcony with a bit of natural light are great places to grow fresh herbs.
  8. In season, there are always low-cost vegetables available. Use them to make jams or sauces for the rest of the year.
  9. Use leftover food to take to make other dishes. You can always make fillings for cannelloni, croquettes, soups and pies.
  10. Use plastic wrap and aluminum foil only when really necessary and reuse wherever possible.
