Giving the body a good Spring clean every now and then is highly recommended: it rests the digestive system, helps remove toxins and purifies your body ... That's why fasting has been popular throughout history. But of course fasting is not for everyone. An alternative for those wanting to detox is the so-called "mono-diet", ie choosing a food or food group and restricting yourself to that for a whole day, over the course of a number of days. For example:
Fruit: ideally, choose a single type of fruit and eat it or take it in juice throughout the day. In Spring, strawberries are a great idea.
Vegetables: You can choose leafy vegetables (like salad), and vegetables such as carrots, radishes, celery. Raw, boiled, in soup or as a juice, seasoned with a tablespoon of olive oil and lemon juice. No potatoes or squash.
Brown rice: any organic variety, seasoned with a little oil, soy sauce and ground seaweed.
Juices are also highly reccomended: they're great sources of vitamins, minerals, water and enzymes. And you don't have to stick to traditional fruit: try out vegetables such as carrots, raw beets, celery, cucumber, peppers, cabbage, apples, strawberries, pineapple, orange, grapefruit and pear. Mix them in whatever way you like best, and if you want to give your digestive system an added bonus or boost energy levels, add one tablespoon of aloe vera juice and / or a teaspoon of spirulina seaweed.
Spring is the ideal time to give your bosy a good clean out, removing toxins accumulated during the winter and preparing your body for summer. If you can't manage to stick to it for a few days, at least try it out one day a week.
