A feast for the eyes and the palate

65 km from Barcelona and just before you enter the province of Girona, you’ll find the town of Palafolls. It’s home to around 6,000 people and is the type of place where children can still play in the streets, which are lined by three-story town houses.

The surrounding area is fertile and has provided a livelihood for generations of farmers. Nine years ago Maria Riera joined them. Bursting with creativity and ideas, she already had farming in her genes thanks to her family, who had a farm where they grew only the best local varieties of seasonal vegetables. So she was no novice when she decided to start her own farm.

Nevertheless, she started out cautiously, initially planting only radishes and spinach crops. But soon she was growing high-quality produce and specialty vegetables for the market: baby salad leaves such as mini rocket, mizuna, chard and micro vegetables. She has now ventured into edible flowers, which thrive here, including simple nasturtiums and exotic spicy Szechuan flowers, a veritable feast for the eyes and the palate.

Maria is always on the lookout for new seeds, new crops, new flowers and the best possible flavors. "My goal is for the farm to produce more interesting and tastier produce every year” she says.
